Some Of The Best From Tor.com 2012 Edition – Tor is a great name in the world of scinece fiction and fantasy. This is an annual collection of short works from some of their authors. So it’s really a best of the best collection and that’s exactly the way it reads.
You’ll find one part of a larger series of stories based on an original piece of art, the story of an international diplomatic conference in a world where magic is the norm, a rocket story (Tor.com has a “birthday” tradition involving rocket stories and this is one of them), a Christmas story, a story where painting and magic intersect and one where Westerns and Science Fiction do. That’s just six of the ten stories here. The rest are just as unique and well written.
I came across this as a free epub book and went with mostly on the basis of Tor’s reputation. Honestly, I didn’t know how much to expect. The book easily topped those minimal expectations and kept climbing like, well, a rocket. The writing is outstanding and you can’t beat the price (still free as near as I can tell).
I’m looking forward to checking out the other editions (at least 2011 and 2013) that I’ve snagged as well.
