The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva (2012) – Gabriel Allon is a gifted art restorer. Under his care great masterpieces return to life after years of neglect. He is also a former Israeli Mossad spy and assassin who fervently wants to put that part of his life behind him. But his former associates in “The Office” lure him back into action when it appears that stolen antiquities are funding the most
dangerous terrorist organization in the world. The plot will lead him to the side of the Pope and to one of the holiest sites in the world.
I stumbled on Daniel Silva and his restorer/spy character Gabriel Allon a while ago. I love thrillers, especially spy thrillers. Sadly, not all of them have the story telling quality that Silva brings to this series. Even better, Silva knows how to keep his fans happy with new additions to the series (now up to 15 books) on an annual basis. Allon is a unique character in the genre. The art angle allows Silva to bring in a whole new world into the story. In the end, it means I not only get a well written thriller, but I get to learn a little something along with my reading fun.
This was especially fun since I was in Rome (where a small part of the action takes place) this past summer. It was easy to visualize some of the locations, particularly St. Peters.
