Movies – 50 Sci-Fi Films You Have to See

Fascinating article over at io9, “50 Brilliant Science Fiction Movies that Everyone Should See At Least Once“.  My quick count says I’ve seen 33 of them.

The itself isn’t particularly surprising.  It ranges from Fritz Lang’s  1927 “Metropolis” to 2015’s “The Martian”.  “Frankenstein”, “Star Wars”, “2001”, “Dr. Stranglove”, “Back to the Future”, there are plenty of familiar names on the list.  So you’ll get everything from relatively hard science to the light and frothy end of the spectrum.

As with any list of this kind there always room for discussion.  I like that the writer, Charlie Jane Anders, doesn’t fall into the “Greatest of All Time” trap.  These are fifty movies that she believes you see at least once.  I only have one disagreement with her on that count.  “Ex Machina” did not impress me at all this past summer.  I’m sure there was something more interesting that could have taken its place here.  Again, the list is intended to create some discussion.

The ones I have yet to see:

  • Solaris
  • Forbidden Planet (Have no idea how I haven’t seen this one)
  • Lathe of Heaven  (Never heard of this one)
  • Brazil
  • The Man in the White Suit (Nor this one)
  • Predator
  • They Live (Nope)
  • Akira (Nope again)
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Gattaca
  • Primer (And one more nope)
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  • The Host
  • District 9
  • Her
  • Predestination
I will gladly take advantage of Ms. Anders work to expand my science fiction movie watching!  You should do the same.
