Welcome to the home page of “Life on the Phlipside”!
If this a little confusing, this blog was known “The View From the Phlipside” for over a decade. It was tied to the radio program I did for WRFA-LP (discussed below). That program ended prior to the pandemic. Since then it’s been a center for my long standing love of the movies. In 2021, I decided to expand the scope, and return this to a more personal blog. I write about the things I love.
The roots of all this are found in radio. “The Phlipside” was the name of my morning drive program on SE-93 in Jamestown, New York for sixteen years. Phlipside is a play on my last name. Men in my family have been known as “Flip” over the years. In the old days of radio, when we actually played vinyl records, the other side of a single was known as the “flipside”. So the name of the show paid homage to history of the industry as well as being a play on my name.
After I had left full time radio (mostly against my will, but that’s another story for another day), I was approached to do a radio program on the local non-profit, community station. Once we had settled on the idea of doing media commentary, we needed a name. It seemed foolish not to play on the established “brand” of the Phlipside name. At the same time I wanted to acknowledge this was something different. So it became “The View From the Phlipside”. The program has made a home at WRFA-LP, Jamestown ever since.
In the years since I started with the radio program I’ve been looking for ways to expand on what’s done here. In May, 2010 this web site was launched. Back then it was more of a personal blog. So you’ll find posts about my sabbatical and other things early on. Quickly it became apparent that the media content was going to be the focus here.
Would love to hear from you!
Peace,
Jay
