My reviews are always honest reflections of my opinion. My goal is to present the potential audience with a consistent and relatively concise overview. They are not reviews of the creators since I have almost never met them. The review is of the work.
This web site reviews movies, some music, and media in general. I generally review what I choose, but am always willing to listen to suggestions or requests. This is not my full-time job so requests are accepted at my discretion.
Rating System
The same basic rating system is used for all reviews:
- Zero stars – Don’t even have a name for it. Very rare. Reserved for things so incredibly awful as to beggar the imagination
- 1 star (*) – Forget It – A more routinely bad offering that has no particularly interesting aspects to it at all
- 2 stars (**) – Not Impressed – This review found at least a couple interesting points to the media but not enough to really inspire me to recommend it.
- 3 stars (***) – Worth A Look – The media is consistently interesting but suffers from at least one large flaw.
- 4 stars (****) – Recommended – This is for media that do an above average job of storytelling and mastering the aspects of their particular type
- 5 stars (*****) – Highest Recommendation – These are the finest examples (in my opinion) of the art form. For someone looking to create a personal collection of the very best, these would be on my list.
If it feels borderline for me I will occasionally go with half star ratings (2.5, 3.5 etc). I also offer “Why I Liked It” and “Why You Will Like It”. Because I’m a bit of a geek about some things I sometimes will become really enthused about something the average consumer may not see/hear. So I try to offer as much information as possible.
Movies
I love the movies, especially older ones. If you are just starting to get into movies it can be harder to figure out what you want to watch from the 100 years before now. I am neither a movie expert, nor a film scholar. I am a movie fan who has a background in acting and has spent some time learning about the how and why of movie making. My views remains those of a fan. I’m trying to point you towards the movies that offer you the most.
Independent movies are often overlooked because they lack the financial backing to publicize them. Some truly great movies get overlooked because of it. So I try to find them and give them a little spotlight time. Consequently these movies may be newer than the others reviewed.
Music
I’ve done a little music reviewing over the years. I spent several years as the Music Director at a small radio station. My “ears” tend to be tuned to a more mainstream sound in rock, pop, country and folk.
