(Some quick looks are more recent movies)
Ghostbusters (2016) – Some good ideas get buried by a train wreck of a script. Are they playing it for laughs or straight? They never quite make up their mind leaving a cast with potential floundering. A couple nice moments, a couple good laughs. The cameos by the original cast should have hit the editing room floor. Not as bad as some folks would have you believe, nowhere near as good as the originals. On a rainy Saturday afternoon if you have nothing better to do…
Rating – ** Not Impressed
Mission:Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) This movie series is basically James Bond on steroids. The “toys” are bigger, the action is bigger, the “Bond Girl” is actually a kick-ass secret operative herself. Predictable? Sure. Ridiculous, over the top enjoyment? Absolutely.
Rating – *** Worth A Look
Arrival (2016) – First contact with an utterly alien race calls in a linguist and a physical scientist to try to communicate. This is what a science fiction movie should look like. Challenging ideas, unique storytelling opportunities, intelligent script. And exactly one explosion. We need more like it.
