Quick Reviews – Jack Reacher 2, Florence Foster Jenkins, Her

Jack Reacher – Never Go Back (2016) – Reacher has both personal and professional mysteries to solve as he takes on a government conspiracy.  I know the fans of the books hate Cruise in the role, but I enjoy his work.  Add in my crush on co-star Cobie Smulders and there’s more than enough here to enjoy.  Yes, it’s predictable.  It’s just fun viewing.

Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) – A touching biopic of the real-life New York socialite who wanted nothing more than to be an operatic singer, despite her lack of talent or technique.  Meryl Streep earned an Oscar nomination for her depiction of Jenkins.  Questions remain about whether or not the lady “got the joke”.  I’ve always believed that she created a bubble around herself that allowed her to believe in the life she wanted to live.  Streep, Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg are wonderful in a movie that will always struggle to find an audience.

Her (2013) – A man (Joaquin Phoenix) slowly falls in love with the Artificial Intelligence (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) that he purchases for his computer.  The two leads are brilliant, and if you’re willing to settle for a solid romance movie then you’ll love “Her”.  If you’re hoping for a science fiction look at AI, personhood, and love, you will leave disappointed.  If you made Samantha a human woman on the other side of the planet or on the moon, you would need to change very little of the script to accommodate the change.  And that’s very sad and disappointing.  Really felt let down by the movie.
