The Wolverine, Marauders, Justice League

(Some quick looks are more recent movies)

The Wolverine (2009) – Thought this might be something a little deeper than most comic book movies, but it’s really more of the same.  Lots of fight scenes, pile on the CGI (the bear was awful), oh, and no Stan Lee cameo. There’s a lot going on here that I didn’t really understand.  Seems like you have to either see every movie in the series to “get” everything or take a “guide”.  That’s never a good sign. Wolverine has run off to hide because bad things have happened and that’s what he does.  Then he gets dragged back into the world to help someone else (is there any character more susceptible to being “guilted” into stuff than this one?).  And then more bad things happen to deepen Wolverines ongoing internal issues. Haven’t we seen this before? Not the worst of the genre but nothing particularly special here either.

Rating – *** Worth A Look

Marauders (2016) – Let me admit up front, the primary reason I recorded this movie was that I saw Dave Bautista’s name in the credits.  He does a nice job with next to nothing to work with here.  But then so does the rest of the cast (Christopher Meloni and Bruce Willis).  An interesting concept wanders farther and farther afield with each passing minute.  Some fun scenes scattered amidst the debris of the rest of the script.

Rating – ** Not Impressed

Justice League (2017) – This movie is at its best when it is the most “human”.  When we get to explore the characters a little more in-depth and get some fun back and forth dialogue (Hello, Joss Whedon!), it’s a lot of fun.  Then there are all the bits when it wants to be all dark and moody Grand Opera.  Dull, dull, dull.  Plus the usual “let’s see if we can’t pack a little more CGI in the movie!”.  There’s some really good stuff lost in the midst of the rest.  The cast is fine, liked Ezra Miller as the Flash, Momoa as Aquaman seemed to have nothing to do other than the confession scene (which was great).  Steppenwolf was a lame, boring villain.

Rating – *** Worth A Look
