A Beautiful Mind, Black Panther, Takers

(Some newer movies I’ve seen recently)
A Beautiful Mind (2001) – The story of genius John Nash, who struggles with mental illness as he expands the world of mathematics.
Directed by Ron Howard                                                     Starring Russell Crowe
Another biopic with the usual issues. The screenwriters manipulate the history in ways that are questionable (the MC never suffered visual hallucinations, only audio), you know what the ending will be, there’s a tendency to try for great drama from everyday life.
Having said all that, this one drew me in more than most. That’s a tribute to the performances, especially of Russell Crowe. A look “behind the curtain” of mental illness.  Those two things alone make it worth a look.

Rating – *** Worth A Look

Black Panther (2018) – A hidden African kingdom may hold the key to the world’s future.  If they survive their own present.

Directed by Ryan Coogler             Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o

Easily the most raved about movie of last year.  Visually gorgeous, groundbreaking in creating heroes and civilizations that do not rely on “justification” by white society, and a lot fun.  As with many superhero movies longer on “Biff/Wham/Pow” than story or characterization, but an enjoyable ride.  Not as good as the fans say, nor as bad as the critics do.

Rating – **** Recommended

Takers (2010) – A stock bank heist story with an engaging cast and an outstanding chase sequence.  If you don’t expect too much from this movie, you will have a fine old time.  Idris Elba, Paul Walker and Matt Dillon lead a solid cast through a very standard script.  In the second half of the movie there is a terrific chase scene.  Think “French Connection” or “Bullitt” on foot, parkour style.

Rating *** Worth A Look
