Why
I Liked It -Interesting, is self-indulgent look a what happens to
radicals when middle age catches them.

Shia
LeBoeuf and Anna Kendrick had to feel like they were spending the
summer with their grandparents. All of them, all at the same
time. Most of the cast is old enough to qualify for the role.
While I’ve never been a huge fan of either of the young actors,
they do very nicely here. The senior cast also handles their roles
well. That’s the biggest asset the movie has.

The
story is similar to various real-life stories about 1960’s radicals
who “went to ground” in the years following the Viet Nam war.
Some made new lives and walked away from the politics of their youth,
while others hold on.

This
could have been a great chance to dive deep into what happened then
and who these people are now. To weigh the question of does decades
of quiet, law abiding life make up for the destruction created all
those years ago. While it is touched on, the story here is mostly
about an egotistical young reporter showing the same kind of zealotry
in pursuit of the “big story” as the radicals showed in their
politics years before. The end is the only thing of importance. If
you get in the way of achieving that end, that’s unfortunate but
unimportant.

There’s
enough interest in the story to give the cast something to work on.
Without a deeper question being asked in the script, we’re left
with a rather thin political thriller with an interesting cast.

It
was a good choice for a slow, chilly weekend.
