A
guilty pleasure that I offer without apology. This is not “my kind
of movie”. More action than character development, more gore than
plot. Loud, bloody, with a story IQ stuck around room temperature.

But,
boy, are they good!

Reeves’ often mocked minimalist acting style is perfect here. Wick
is a killing machine. Not an indiscriminate one, or one without a
personal sense of honor, but a focused weapon of infinite
determination. When Skynet needed a prototype for the Terminators, it
was looking right at John Wick.

In
the series’s first installment, foolish bad people kill Wick’s
puppy. The resulting bloodletting was impressive. This second
installment begins with his quest to clear up the last detail from
the first movie, his missing 1969 Mustang. The damage inflicted in
its return is bad in human terms, but is close to unbearable if
you’re a car fan.

What
has impressed me in both movies is the stylish handling of the blood.
There’s a lot of blood in these movies. But the movie isn’t about
the blood, so it’s placed in an appropriate place while still
covering everything in sight. As mentioned before, there’s not a
lot of plot here. The John Wick movies are about character and style.
A character that kills without pause, wants nothing more than peace
in retirement, and loves puppies. There’s just enough quality
dialogue to carry everything forward. The “professional courtesy”
bit is both a well-honed bit of writing and acting.

There’s
a lot of film making skills on display here. It’s easy to overlook
in the crashes, explosions, stabbings, and shootings, but it’s there
if you want to look for it.

Or
you can sit back with a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy the ride.
