Why
I Liked It: Set in western New York, it’s a fun, if flawed
thriller.

I
selected the movie because it sounded like it could be fun. Imagine
my surprise to discover they set it in western New York, where I
lived for 30 years. Even better, they made the movie in Elba, New
York and not some look-a-like location. So I went into the movie in a
very good mood.

My
mood took a bit of a hammering along the way.

If
you are into cryptocurrency, do NOT watch this movie. The script
takes the shallowest, least informative approach to the topic. It
exists solely as a prop for the story. I don’t agree with some
critics who wanted more of a documentary approach. In the course of
my varied work experience, I voiced a nine book series on
cryptocurrency. It was enough for me to spot the shoddy job done by
the movie, and to know that most people would be even more lost by
the movie if it had gone deep on the subject.

The
build-up in the first half of the movie is fine (as long as you don’t
expect any understanding of the topic). The actors are fine. Chris and
Liam Hemsworth’s big brother Luke does a nice job walking the line
on a brother suffering from PTSD. Beau Knapp was unknown to me but is
adequate in the role of the big city banker sent back to the boonies.
Add in the veteran presence of Hennessy and Russell and there’s
enough talent on the screen to carry the movie. In the second half,
either the scriptwriters or the director ran out of ideas. The movie
gets lost for a while, then offers a satisfying ending.

Not
a movie I’d recommend you go out of your way to see, but
plenty of fun here for a rainy weekend.
