Independence Day – Now What?

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…

Our understanding of these words has changed over the years. The one constant has been that we have not fully lived into them. That’s enough for some to want to toss the entire American experiment into the dustbin of history.

I am not one of those people.

While the version of that experiment that exists now is deeply flawed, I do not believe that the underlying concepts are. I also know that the models on offer to replace it of the moment are worse in every aspect. Profound change is required. But it must be a change that lifts all of us.

Years ago, I wrote that God had already blessed America. It was time for us to do the great things that such a blessing permits us. The question I asked then I’ll ask again today.

God Blessed America.

Now what?
