The Lady Seems Upset

Just Do Whatever the Very Tall, Very Angry Lady Wants

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) – Nancy Archer has had a bad couple of days.  Her cheating husband is fooling around with another woman, aliens in a UFO assaulted her and someone tried to kill her!  The result is a sudden spurt in her height and an extremely bad attitude.

Directed by Nathan Juran

Starring – Allison Hayes, Williams Hudson, Yvette Vickers

Why I Liked It – Just some silly B-movie adventures.

This movie’s name comes up on a regular basis when people talk the worst movies of all time.  I think that’s a gross over statement.  Let’s not ask the movie to be more than its intended.  This was a low budget, 1950’s science fiction thriller.  It was intended to cash in on two successful predecessors, “The Amazing Colossal Man”, and “The Amazing Shrinking Man.”  It was shot in eight days for less than $90,000, which would be about $800,000 today.

Great art was not the goal.

I’d give the first half hour of the movie decent marks.  Within the confines of its origins, the movie is interesting and fun.  Once the giant hand makes an appearance, I grant you that it descends from that pinnacle quite a bit.  Because the second half relies heavily on special effects, and those special effects are less than special, the movie struggles to the end.

On the other hand, it has one of the greatest movie posters of all time.

You watch this movie for the sheer foolish fun of it all.  There’s really not much more to say about it.  Make some popcorn, start the movie, and hoot at the absurdity of it all.  I rooted for Nancy the whole way through.  But I never did figure out where her clothes came from.

You can find “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” on Prime, YouTube, Google Play, Redbox, Apple TV, and Vudu.
