3D Creativity Part Two

Stretching My Experience

Earlier this year, I shared a creativity project that included digital design and 3-D printing. I created a pair of hall passes for one class at my school. They were pretty straightforward from a design point of view. I had a little fun with the painting for them.

This completes that experiment (at least for the time being). The Barbering students share the classroom and teacher with the Cosmetology program (just on alternate days). I knew they wouldn’t be happy having to use the Cosmo passes, so I created something different for them. As with any new skill, there are still some bumps along the way. The shape is based on the traditional barber pole. Despite using a computer program that should make duplicating shapes easy, I still managed to make the form asymmetrical. If I was clever, I’d claim that as a design element, but it wasn’t. I tried to make it work, but never got it right. Eventually, I needed to move on and settled for what I had.

The challenge was the painting. This is much more complicated than the first passes. I thought the blues on the main body, and the blue strips would show greater difference. Instead, they are very close. I worked with what I had, so this becomes an “It is what it is” result. The irregularities in the paint job are more obvious here than they are in life. I’ve filed away several lessons learned!

This is the final result. I’m happy with it. The final product is pretty cool looking. Even better, I learned several things from the process. I heard from the class today that they like it. Very cool.

Peace.
